Destination Christchurch

Christchurch, originally named after Christ Church in Oxford, still retains the influences of its founders.  As the largest city in, and also the gateway to, the South Island, Christchurch is a great base to explore the northern and mid Canterbury regions.

Christchurch city is a fusion of hustle and bustle and tranquil park settings. The vibrant city centre is abundant with world class dining, spas and luxurious villa accommodation all woven amongst city green spaces, parks and the Christchurch Botanical Gardens.

There is plenty to explore within an hour of Christchurch.  The Banks Peninsula offers a great day trip through the countryside and to the French-influenced summer resort village of Akaroa.  The high country playground of Methven has pristine fishing waters and in winter, nearby Mt Hutt has ‘New Zealand’s longest ski season.’

Akaroa
Akaroa is a quaint and charming village located an easy one hour drive from Christchurch city.  Meaning ‘Long Harbour’ in Maori, Akaroa was one of the first substantial European settlements of the region, mostly used as a safe harbour for whalers and sealers working in the southern ocean.  Today the pristine harbour waters are home to a variety of sea life, including the rare Hector Dolphins, fur seals and blue penguins.

Methven
Methven is situated one hour from Christchurch city and is the base for many outdoor activities throughout the year.  In winter, nearby Mt Hutt offers world class skiing and heli-skiing, from beginner right through to the most advanced.  Activities in the summer months range from golf, horse riding, rafting and fishing on the Rakaia river.

Hanmer Springs
This small town 90 minutes north of Christchurch offers a large number of activities - but the biggest draw is thermal pools and spa.  There are a number of pools to choose from, such as the rock pools, all natural sulphur pools, private pools, and regular swimming pool.  Additional facilities include a full day spa and family activity area.
